Genetista estadounidense. Obtuvo un Ph.D. en genética en el Instituto Tecnológico de California. Cruzando miles de moscas de la fruta demostró que los genes se disponen en el cromosoma en el orden que corresponde a los segmentos corporales, ordenamiento conocido actualmente como el principio de colinearidad. El estudio de Lewis contribuyó a explicar los mecanismos del desarrollo biológico general, incluidas las causas de las deformaciones presentes en los seres humanos al nacer. En 1995 compartió el Premio Nobel con Christiane Nüsslein-Volhard (n. 1942) y Eric F. Wieschaus (n. 1947).
